Meet Robby Amonett...

As a child, when asked what I wanted to be when I grew up-I said two things: a cowboy or an artist. In present day, I am a retired professional bull rider with a BFA in painting from the University of Montevalio, located in the quaint little town that shares the same name. I guess one could concur that I am on the right track; also along the way I acquired the need for poetry and music.

In my art, these paths in life become avenues for creativity. I recently have completed a series of abstracts entitled "Synthesis of the Soul"; which are a collection of live action performance paintings done with live bands in a wide range of genres. This series, over a period of a year and a half, has taken me to venues throughout the southeast-from Mezo's Jukejoint in Ocean Springs, MS painting with local bands such as Alligator/Zebra and Roscoe Bandana to the Hangout Music and Arts Festival in Gulf Shores, AL ... where I painted with national recording artists such as The Flaming Lips, Primus, and Galactic (just to name a few).

Prior to the "Synthesis" series, I did a series of narrative paintings that dealt with introspection of the self. In this series, I was attempting to 'lose' the figure by delving into pure abstract; and because of this, I figured that the best subject to lose was myself. This gradual move to an abstract narrative was guided by the titles which were in the form of Haiku. The use of poetry added to my desire to obtain synthesis in the arts. This series entitled "Walking Inside Myself" included an installation of a 7'x7'x7' cube of a self-portrait that the viewer literally walked into where a group of pure abstracts representing ideas inside my head were displayed, hence the -title of the show.

Currently, I have returned back to the figure, portraying musicians and bar scenes that I had sketched at shows during the synthesis series ... and as always I am looking to incorporate new ideas and insights to my growing body of work
